The Ancient Egyptians are the first known people that learned to make glass. Around 1500 BC they started to craft jars and beads from the molten sand although they had been using glass as part of the glaze in their pottery since 8000 BC.

Pirate Fact Twenty Nine
Edward Teach AKA Blackbeard enhanced his fearsome image during battle by twisting fuses into his beard and lighting them. That created smoke around his face which made him even more terrifying to his opponents.
